To Whom it May Concern:
We began the process of building a small, strawbale cottage in October of last year. Curtis Scheib/Eco Energy Builders was hired to lead a group of novices in the framing and strawbale raising of our little cottage in Salida, Colorado beginning January 1999. Curtis was very accommodating to our schedules, needs and training of our always varying helpers. For us, this was an invaluable trait as we wanted to have our friends part of the building process. We are certain that it was not always easy for Curtis but he gave us no complaints. He takes pride in his work and has earned the title of Craftsman in its truest sense. Having him as our lead in this building process has helped us to keep our priorities straight and our wits about us through his patience, good ideas, common sense and a much needed sense of humor.
We did our own General Contracting on the cottage and Curtis was able to offer his valuable experience in dealing with subcontractors, building department, purchasing and general builder sense. We found him to be conscientious about the quality of his work and the service he gives to his clients. You can tell he enjoys his job, teaching others and building with low impact to the earth. He built our garage and he will be assisting us with the main house when that time comes. Curtis also set up for us our solar system and wind machine. We have been able to live "off the grid" with few problems and having been 'city folk' for most our lives, I think that says a lot.
Building a large home or a small cottage requires much more than money and time, especially a strawbale home. It requires ingenuity, persistence, and thought from "outside the box." It is without a doubt that we found the right man to help us when we found Curtis. We are fortunate to say that Curtis has been much more to us than a builder after our several months of working together.
Respectfully,
Sylvia Ortega and Doug Wagley

ENERGY PERFORMANCE:
The following numbers were developed using Energy-10 software and actual bills from the Waldorf School. The discrepancy between the numbers comes from the fact that in the first year of use, the building was not used to its fullest potential (i.e., keeping the doors closed, turning the thermostats back at night and on vacations). This is due to the need to educate teachers and building users about working in a passive solar structure. The discrepancy in numbers can also be used to improve future buildings that will be built on the property, such as adding setback thermostats for the heaters and improving the weather-stripping. The % Reduction is calculated using the actual bills, but the true potential for the building can be seen in the Energy 10 output.
